O sorgo biomassa [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] é considerado uma nova alternativa para produção de bioenergia. Neste sentido os principais objetivos dos programas de melhoramento do sorgo biomassa são a melhoria da qualidade e aumento da produtividade de biomassa verde. Alguns genótipos mutantes de sorgo biomassa, denominados brown midrib (bmr) - com menor teor de lignina - são favoráveis à etapa de pré-tratamento, e são capazes de facilitar a desorganização do complexo lignocelulósico. Além disso, outra característica de interesse são genótipos de sorgo biomassa com sensibilidade ao fotoperíodo.
